ICC World Cup 2023: Latham and Phillips shine for New Zealand against Afghanistan.

The middle-order batters of New Zealand endorse Kiwis to their fourth victory in the ICC World Cup 2023 as they beat Afghanistan with 149 runs. Tom Latham (68) and Glenn Phillips (71) scored half centuries to put a winning total on the scoreboard for the young batting line-up of Afghanistan.

Afghanistan could not chase the target; they kept losing wickets very cheaply, bowled out on just 139 runs, and lost by a scale of 149 runs.

The Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips partnership turned the momentum of the match.


In the initial stages, the Black Caps were in trouble as they lost sudden wickets in quick sessions. They needed a partnership to get things right. Latham and Phillips took the charge to create that partnership for the team. Both players took their time at the start and got their rhythm.

They faced the spin trio of Afghanistan very well and got past the tough situation. Once they got their hands right, both the batters took on the bowlers and completed their half centuries. They combined for 144 runs, but Phillips could not stretch his inning more, and Latham also bowled in the same over.

When kiwis batted first, Devon Conway and Will Young looked good and opened the innings nicely. Young Rachin Ravindra played well for his 32 runs and shared a stan with Young, while Mujeeb trapped Conway. The back caps embarked on a run of 110 for four wickets as they suddenly began to take wickets.

New Zealand reached 288 thanks to a partnership between captain Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips, which was plenty for the Afghan batters .

It was never simple to chase when up against kiwis potent bowling attack. Afghanistan kept losing wickets as their openers gradually got out of the game after starting very slowly. With 36 runs, Rehmat Shah was the top scorer. Finally, Afghanistan lost the match by an overwhelming score of 149 runs after being bowled out for 139 in just 35 overs.
